What is a B Corp
B Corp certification is for companies looking to make a difference worldwide. The rigorous B Corp certification process examines how companies treat their employees, customers, communities, and the environment.
The business is given an overall score based on questions broken down into sub-questions. You can achieve B Corp status if you score over 80. This is like getting high scores on the most socially conscious video game ever!
Does this mean that you are “eco-friendly”
B Corp is not just about being green and eco-friendly. B Corp is not just about being green.
Exposure Ninja’s initial motivation to pursue B Corp certification was that we cared about our team, each other, and our community.
Let me explain
Running a business was never about chasing PSPSPSPSPS for us (although the bottom line is very important). We care more about what we can achieve with PSs to make a difference. The people who make up a company are what make it.
We decided to do many things at Exposure Ninja over the years, even before B Corp came on our radar. We did them because they felt right. Some came from Tim, our Head Ninja. Others came from me. But, most of all, they came directly from our team. Here are a few of them:
We have worked remotely with clients and marketing specialists worldwide for years (even before COVID-19 was cool).
Flexible working allows our team to spend more time doing what they enjoy- with their families, traveling the world, or writing a book.
A percentage of time paid for work is spent on training. Our agency places a lot of emphasis on growth and development because marketing is changing quickly (anyone interested in algorithm updates or AI?). Our team is essential to delivering outstanding results for our clients, as we are a service-based company.
Mentoring aspiring marketers is aimed at helping those who are trying to break into marketing.
Spend the health and wellness subsidy on what our team needs most for their health.
We have a generous sick leave plan modeled after the UK teachers’ sick leave policy. No other agency has come close to matching our sick leave policy. This was all about protecting our team at their most vulnerable. We hope they never need it, but it’s always there if they ever do.
Maternity and paternity benefits are generous. Mums get eight weeks at full salary for maternity leave, and dads receive the same amount of time at full wage for paternity. Our maternity and paternity laws in the UK encourage men to work while women stay home. This was our first step towards achieving equality.
We do pro bono projects because we enjoy it. One example is the free websites we created for the British BAME Community, including Black History Walks.
We did all of this positive stuff just because we wanted it. Some of these decisions may seem obvious to some, but to others, they could be costly (and they are).
One of our clients brought up B Corp and suggested we go for it. Before then, we had not heard about B Corps, but we knew that some of the biggest brands, such as Patagonia and The Body Shop, were B Corps.
When we looked into it, we were thrilled to discover that B Corp is a roadmap that can inspire us to do more good. We found many things we already did were part of B Corp’s criteria and benchmarks. This opened up even more possibilities for what we could do.

What is a B Corp means to us
We are obsessed at Exposure Ninja with making a positive difference. Our B Corp certification shows businesses can be profitable and still care about their employees, communities, and the planet.
It has been a fascinating process and hard work. Benchmarking our initiatives has been a great way to discover areas we hadn’t considered before. The past year has been filled with growth, learning, policy making, doing our numbers, benchmarking, and figuring out ways to improve.
Only 1000 companies in the UK have achieved B Corp status. We are proud to be part of a group that cares about its people, communities, and our planet. We are proud to be among other companies that give a c%*!
We’re not going to stop here. We are excited to share with you our journey as we strive to be more positive and to inspire other companies to follow us into the B Corp world.
Thank you to everyone in the Exposure Ninja team who made becoming a B Corp possible and whose values, ideas, and dreams led us down this path. An especially big thank you to Emma Lamont, Rain Agustin, Maisa Garcia, Tim C-K, and Vic Lane, who worked their socks off to get us here.
If becoming B Corp certified interests you, I would happily talk with you anytime. I would love to tell our story, advise and encourage other businesses to become B Corp.
